Why Is The Library Important?
In today's digital age, many people have started to think that the book as we know it is a dinosaur, and that the library only has books, so it is a dinosaur, as well.
Not so. The library is also a place where our students can find information, and most of our information is digital.
Yes, the library has many, many books. Our library holds over 9,000 books and resources for the students of TMMS and their teachers to use at any time. On average, we have over 1,000 books out in circulation at any one time, and our library aides shelve over 500 books per day.
In addition to books, though, our library is full of digital resources. We have the passwords to thousands and thousands of dollars of online, digital resources as well as eBooks and carefully curated lists of helpful websites and vetted information that our students can count as being accurate.
The librarian has a Master's degree in Information Science. She can help you with mining the giant, enormous Internet for information with the help of Boolean searching and databases, help you determine if the information is credible, help you cite your sources and help you find a fantastic way to present your findings in print or digital media. Her training is as much technology as it is literary. With the advent of social media, students have to learn how to search well so that they are not fooled into thinking that whatever some average guy posted on the Internet is true.
The library is one of the last free things in the world. Information should always be free. It is our job to protect that right, and to make sure our children have every possible tool available to them to learn.
